NYGH Open House 2026: What We Saw and What Parents Should Know

We visited Nanyang Girls' High School Open House on 11 April 2026. Here's what stood out — from the new Fusion curriculum to DSA changes, campus highlights, and practical tips for parents considering NYGH.

We attended the Nanyang Girls' High School (NYGH) Open House on Saturday, 11 April 2026. With over a century of history and one of the most competitive PSLE cut-off points in Singapore, NYGH draws hundreds of families each year. Here's our first-hand account of what the open house covered — and what matters most if you're considering NYGH for your daughter.

What Stood Out at the Open House

The Fusion Curriculum

The biggest talking point was the Fusion curriculum, introduced in 2024. It integrates Design Thinking and Maker Education into core academic subjects. Rather than learning in silos, students work on authentic, cross-disciplinary projects. In 2025, this ran for Sec 1 and 2 students, culminating in a focused three-week block during Term 2 where students tackle a major design challenge. Teachers at the showcase explained how the programme builds real-world problem-solving skills alongside academic rigour.

Curriculum and CCA Showcases

The school set up interactive booths across the campus, each run by students and teachers. Highlights included live demonstrations from the Chinese Orchestra and Concert Band, hands-on science experiments, and art exhibits from the Art Elective Programme — NYGH was the first school in Singapore to offer AEP back in 1984.

With roughly 39 CCAs on offer, the range is impressive: from Wushu and Dragon & Lion Dance Troupe to Debate Club and Infocomm Club. Students at each booth were articulate, confident, and clearly proud of their school — a good indicator of school culture.

Principal's Address and Q&A

Principal Ms Siau Fong Fui spoke about the school's vision: "Every Nanyang Girl a Respected Member of Society and an Agent of Change." She emphasised the bilingual and bicultural identity that sets NYGH apart — as a SAP school, English and Chinese are both taught as first languages. The Q&A session was candid, with parents asking about IP progression to Hwa Chong, workload expectations, and the recent DSA changes.

Campus Trail

The campus trail was well-organised, guiding visitors through key facilities with hands-on activities and quizzes along the way. Student ambassadors, teachers, parents, and school leaders were stationed at various points, making it easy to ask questions. The 36,400 sqm campus at Bukit Timah felt spacious and well-maintained.

The Integrated Programme: 6 Years to A-Levels

NYGH's Integrated Programme is a six-year pathway: four years at NYGH (Sec 1–4) followed by two years at Hwa Chong Institution's college section. Students skip the O-Level examinations entirely, allowing deeper exploration of subjects.

The IP curriculum is built on Concept-Based Learning (adopted since 2016), which emphasises deep conceptual understanding and the ability to transfer knowledge across contexts. The eight academic areas span Chinese Language & Culture, Language Arts, Humanities, Mathematics, Science, Aesthetics, Physical Education, and ICT.

Several parents we spoke with were particularly interested in the IP's talent development tracks:

  • Art Elective Programme (AEP) — four-year programme with MOE fee subsidy
  • Humanities Programme — offers Philosophy, Advanced Literature, Geography, and History
  • Bicultural Studies Programme (BSP) — under the SAP Scholarship from MOE
  • Science & Math Talent Programme (SMTP)
  • Higher Music Programme

DSA 2026: What Changed This Year

NYGH offers 18 DSA talent areas for 2026 intake (entry in 2027). However, there were notable changes this year that caught many parents off guard:

⚠️ 3 DSA Categories Dropped for 2026

  • Mathematics — previously a popular academic DSA path
  • Science — was available in 2025
  • Artistic Gymnastics — removed from sports options

This is significant if your child has been preparing for Math Olympiads or Science competitions specifically targeting NYGH DSA. Alternative schools for STEM DSA include NUS High, Dunman High, and Raffles Girls' School.

🎯 Academic & Leadership (2)

  • Bilingualism
  • Service Leadership

🎨 Aesthetics (7)

  • Chinese Calligraphy
  • Chinese Dance
  • Chinese Orchestra
  • Concert Band
  • Dragon & Lion Dance
  • Guzheng Ensemble
  • String Ensemble

⚽ Sports & Games (9)

  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Netball
  • Softball
  • Table Tennis
  • Tennis
  • Track & Field
  • Volleyball
  • Wushu

Students admitted via DSA must honour their commitment for all four years at NYGH before proceeding to HCI. Eligibility requires PSLE Posting Group 3 qualification.

Student Life and Development

NYGH's student development framework is built on what they call Positive Education, structured around three pillars:

  • Power of Me — personal values, growth mindset, mindfulness
  • Power of Community — empathy, gratitude, positive relationships
  • Power of Yet — lifelong learning and continuous improvement

NY PLus Programme

The co-curricular development programme runs across all four years:

  • Sec 1: Dragon boating, orienteering, 3-day in-school camp
  • Sec 2: Community service initiatives, career exploration, Malaysia trip
  • Sec 3: Outward Bound Singapore, 6-day China programme with school and industry visits
  • Sec 4: Career conferences, industry visits, BseLIGHT boarding experience for self-discovery

Practical Tips for Visitors

🚗 Getting There

  • No parking at the school — take public transport
  • MRT: Sixth Avenue (DT7) or Tan Kah Kee (DT8) on the Downtown Line
  • Bus: 66, 67, 74, 151, 154, 156, 157, 170, 174, 852, 961
  • Arrive early — the event runs 8 AM to 2 PM but the Principal's talk fills up quickly

Common Questions from Parents

Does my daughter need Higher Chinese background to apply?

No. NYGH welcomes students regardless of prior Higher Chinese background. As a SAP school, students will study both English and Chinese as first languages, but the school provides support for students transitioning to a bilingual environment.

What PSLE score does my daughter need?

The 2026 intake cut-off is AL 6 for non-affiliated students and AL 8 for affiliated students. This is among the most competitive in Singapore, requiring near-perfect PSLE results.

Can she still take O-Levels on the IP track?

The IP is designed to bypass O-Levels, proceeding directly to A-Levels at Hwa Chong Institution. Students who wish to transfer out of the IP may do so, but this is uncommon.

Is boarding still available?

The Nanyang Girls' Boarding School is closing at the end of the current year as the lease ends. The boarding experience will transition to Hwa Chong Boarding School.

Our Verdict

NYGH's open house gave a clear picture of a school that takes its bilingual and bicultural mission seriously. The Fusion curriculum is a genuine differentiator — not just a buzzword — and the depth of talent development programmes (AEP, Humanities, BSP) goes beyond what most secondary schools offer.

The DSA changes for 2026 are worth noting early, especially if your child is strong in Math or Science. With those paths closed at NYGH, families may want to look at tuition centres that offer preparation for alternative DSA schools.

If your daughter thrives in a bilingual environment, values a strong CCA culture, and aims for the HCI IP pathway, NYGH deserves a serious look.
